Was the rule an infringement on Second Amendment rights, or was it merely protecting the public from people who should not have firearms?
In the waning days of the Obama administration, a rule was implemented requiring Social Security to review its lists for people receiving certain disability payments, where the disability was related to mental impairment. The names of the people identified by Social Security would then be flagged in the national gun-purchasing background-check system.
The Obama administration described it as a way to provide more complete information in the database regarding people who should not have access to firearms. Gun rights advocates saw it a bit differently; and argued that it was an indirect way to further gun control.
Social Security finalized the rule last month, which means that Congress can still repeal it under the provisions of the Congressional Review Act. Many expect House Republicans to include the rule in their sweep to remove a number of the Obama administration rules.
